Hear, hear! Give the Iraqi people, who we profess to care about so much, the sovereignty they deserve. They have shown they have the tenacity to resist this occupation and they can certainly do MUCH better than the U.S. to repair the nation we have ravaged. The condescension of our government (including many Democrats) toward them is really disgraceful.
I can only hope this is true. While the Iraq sectarian strife is largely a botched result of deliberate US covert ops to foment division, the iraqis’ falling for it has cetainly hampred their ability to drive the vile yankees out.
I wish to hell this cogent piece could be seen in every newspaper in the country. Wake up America and smell the damned coffee.
Whenever I read about Iraq’s “violent” past, its sectarian divisions, and the “inability” of the Iraqi people to control self-destructive sectarian violence, I think what this country would be like under a vicious armed occupation by a strong foreign power determined to control our natural resources. I wonder how Americans would feel if a brutal bombing campaign destroyed our nation’s capital and our political infrastructure. Think what life whould be like if the occupation forces conducted massive sweeps of “suspicious” people, imprisoned and tortured them, destroyed our economy and created 70% unemployment, reduced electricity and availablility of fresh water to a few hours a day.
Think of the divisions that exist here: the hate rhetoric spewed out daily by right wing political and “religious” radio and tv commentators, the xenphobia against “illegal aliens,” the racial divide that has grown greater and more hateful. Think how we would feel about people who cooperated with the occupier, out of fear or to protect their families. think of the number of people who have guns in this country, then think of how quickly reciprocal violence grows and intensifies.
I wonder what this country would be like if we were in the same cicumstance that we have brought about in Iraq.
The hands of the Americans are already smeared with the blood of thousands upon thousands of innocent human beings. It is THEIR government that has done and is doing the killing. It is THEIR dollars that fuel THEIR killing machines. It is in THEIR all fifty states that produce lethal weapons. It was THEIR congress that approved the killings. How can these people possibly plea ignorance? Perhaps they may claim that THEIR government fooled them all. Well, brother, if you are that naïve and gullible, then you deserve the government you got; why complain? Have you ever witnessed terrified mothers hugging their children as bombs keep falling on their heads under ‘Shock and Awe’? You people probably thought of it as video game as you were watching it on TV. I can assure you that the rest of the world didn’t; neither did those women and children whose bodies were torn to pieces. How can some people be so heartless? But remember, you are still an accomplice. History and people, including you, will always remember that it was the Americans who did it. Just like history and people still remember that it was the Germans who were responsible for WWII war crimes, both good and bad Germans.
Hmmm. The rest of the world has a right to ask - what kind of a people go about their lives everyday so blindly they see no consequences in any of their actions?
Speaking from my own experience, we worship work and obsess about money. Because we pay “market value” to huge corporations for what we need for survival. And we have to work for them, we have little choice. (And we call this a “free” market. As if I could go out and start a competitor to my power and utility company tomorrow.) We get more fierce about it as things grow more and more expensive in comparison to our earning power.
Also, a consumer culture puts importance on what people wear, what car they drive and other BS. We need a mortgage, a car loan, etc, etc, to feel secure and the corporations hold the strings, not us. It’s true. What we need for our families to survive is often completely excessive. (A family of four does not need three or four bathrooms, for instance. And I can’t possibly see wasting money on video game machines)
It’s also true: most of us, even many of the well-off, live with a subliminal terror of poverty. There are always just enough of us, uninsured, with unstable livelihood, without a backup plan, to keep the rest nervous. There is the clever backbone of the American brainwash.
And so we are obsessed. We don’t look further into where our money goes when it goes out. And if we do, the market mentality has caused most people to develop rationalizations of some kind, in my opinion. Because we don’t think we have a choice. And we fear a fundamental change in values, because we fear being alone in the struggle.
Our system is tragically flawed. We may have what we need to survive and even thrive in some respects (some of us). But the good life for us, and even the so-so life, is obtained by funding the end of other people’s lives. We live knowing this in the back of our minds.
