Get it right Demos. Aug. 2008 is too far away. Bring the troops home now — honestly.

  2. Joel Wendland March 21st, 2007 3:58 pm

It’s time to move the whole country forward by passing a timetable for withdrawal.

We in the peace movement have our views about how to end the war immediately etc. But saying we won’t play ball if the Dems don’t agree with us keeps us right we’re we’re at.

Most Americans want the war to end, but to actually end it will take more than just th epeace movement minority to do so.

As cynical as it may seem to pressure someone by saying voting against the Iraq Accountability Act hands Bush a victory, it is just plain true. Not liking that fact doesn’t make it less true.

It’s time that people started voting with their wallet to tell MoveOn what we think about their new DLC-style policies. There are plenty of real progressive organizations we can support that will never sell out their supporters. Groups like the Backbone Campaign (backbonecampaign.org) and Progressive Democrats of America (pdamerica.org) will stay focused on real policy changes that will move us forward and never, ever start supporting illegal, immoral wars. I know that for the foreseeable future I will give not one more cent to MoveOn.

  4. The Big Raven March 21st, 2007 4:32 pm

totally sold out, yes we need a national timetable period. And dems, get a grip and quit worrying about your turn at the public money pit….how shamefull!

  5. opeluboy March 21st, 2007 6:31 pm

    Whip it. Whip it good.

  6. SFisher March 21st, 2007 7:17 pm

MoveOn has been going retrograde for a while. They’ve refused to promote impeachment because, they said, when their members were polled that was not a priority. Why? Because impeachment was not an option on the poll they’re citing.

MoveOn may be defunct and need to MoveOver, but other PACs bear watching as well. The trouble with PACs is that too many people become chiefs without being Indians first. When put to the test, few PAC members are truly sincere.

We’re desperate for reform, but need to find a common ground of reality as well. We can’t depend upon a PAC to provide us with substantial, well informed opinions. We can only rely upon ourselves.

Unfortunately, it is “just plain true” that voting against the Iraq Accountability Act would “hand Bush a victory” that would be disastrous. Bush and Cheney are begging to be impeached. Whether we impeach, indict, or force to resign, it is clear this is the only way to stem the war in Iraq.

“We live in occupied country, misunderstood; justice will take us millions of intricate moves.” - William Stafford

“The congressman also noted that Democratic leaders had “made clear” to him that they might yank funding requests he had made for projects in his district if he did not support the measure.”

Excuse me while I go to the bathroom and vomit in the political toilet bowl.

    To paraphrase Jim Morrison:

    There’s blood in the Chamber,
    it’s up to my ankles-

    There’s blood in the Aisles,
    it’s up to my knees-

    There’s blood on the Floor,
    and it’s following me.

Hey, I think I need to use that tiolet bowl - move over.

  9. boy howdy March 21st, 2007 10:56 pm

The bill the Dems are whipping for is a rather mushy dead letter anyway. Bush will ignore it, veto it. It’s all moot. So how the representative votes will only indicate his integrity, and separate the wheat from the chaff. We shall see what we shall see.

  10. NotOneMore.US March 22nd, 2007 1:21 am

I’m glad that at least Maxine Waters and Lynn Woolsey are speaking to the truth when so many democrats are posturing for more votes.

There is a war going on, it is killing people, and we aren’t even clear yet that it is unacceptable?

There is certainly a fool in this country, and it is the democratic Party leadership.

I am grateful everyday that Maxine Waters and Lynn Woolsey speak up, but it is sad that they are the only ones.

Sometimes you don’t get to do a do-over. Turn Iraq over to the UN, bring back the troops, rebuild Iraq, and then the US. Oh wait, that isn’t profitable to Halliburton and Blackwater, therefore it won’t happen.

Maybe this is what we deserve since mainstream society hasn’t demanded that peace and justice be a goal and a requirement for any US decision.

    so it goes,
    AG

As I said in another post, if you want to give support to real progressives who hold firm on principle, then quit sending your money to Move-on and start sending it to Progressive Democrats of America. They have core issues and they stand behind them. (Full disclosure: I am a member of Progressive Democrats of America and know what they are about, and they are not afraid to say what they are about.)

This will now be the Democrats war, and now that Bush will be funded to practically the end of his term, they will be stuck with it and when it is lost, as it inevitably is in terms of not being able to be won militarly, then they will be seen as the party that lost the war and occupation.

Call your Congress person and tell them you support Rep. Barbara Lee’s H.R. 508, a real resolution to end the occupation and find a diplomatic solution.

    http://tinyurl.com/ytr245

  12. MichaelPDA March 22nd, 2007 6:57 am

    Joel, you say:

“We in the peace movement have our views about how to end the war immediately etc. But saying we won’t play ball if the Dems don’t agree with us keeps us right we’re we’re at.”

Well the wording of what will be passed has loopholes that Bush can get around. It has language dropped that would have made it impossible for Bush to invade Iran. It is not strong enough, and in the next year and one-half how many of our worthy soldiers will die as result of what is ulimately a failed endeavor?

Our military presence there is not the solution. Bring ‘em home! Support Barbara Lee, and call her office to thank her.

  13. MichaelPDA March 22nd, 2007 7:02 am

I suggest that people start supporting Progressive Democrats of America rather then sending their support to Move-On. It is time to move on to a group that says what it stands for and works for what it stands for, and doesn’t just jump on the next means to raise money. It is no willow-the-wisp. Of course, as you can see by my chose identity, I am a member of PDA, thus my bias is for a group that is building a long-term plan for change. We in the peace movement have our views about how to end the war immediately etc. But saying we won’t play ball if the Dems don’t agree with us keeps us right we’re we’re at.

  14. tearsfromastar March 22nd, 2007 7:04 am

It is a shame that politicians can be so weak, but that is nothing new. They revel in the art of compromise. WE CAN’T COMPROMISE. We need to keep building the peace movement wider, broader, stronger, and put forth the right program to help our society. We can’t have any of the things they say they’re going to do with all the money going to the war. This is the central moral question of our time. We will continue to fight to stop this carnage and useless death. If they don’t get it, it’s on them. We need to keep confronting their immoral choices. In this it is like the civil rights movement even more than Vietnam. If we keep our eyes o n the prize and keep confronting their immoral choices to continue this war, we will stop it. Depression and discouragement is as much our enemy as the war. To quote an old civil rights song. “Ain’t gonna let nobody turn us around.”- Gonna keep on a walking’ and keep on a talkin’” There are volumes of wisdom in that.

  15. MichaelPDA March 22nd, 2007 7:07 am

Here is the amendment that should have been in the bill:

AMENDMENT TO H.R. _____, AS REPORTED

    (SUPPLEMENTAL APPROPRIATIONS, 2007)

OFFERED BY MS. LEE OF CALIFORNIA

At the end of the bill (before the short title), insert the following:

SEC. ___. (a) Funds appropriated for Operation Iraqi Freedom or otherwise made available to the Department of Defense under any provision of law may be obligated and expended within the Republic of Iraq only for the purpose of providing for-

    (1) the continued protection of members of the Armed Forces who are in Iraq participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Department of Defense contractor personnel who are in Iraq performing contracts related to such Operation, pending and during the withdrawal of such members of the Armed Forces and such contractor personnel; and

    (2) the safe and complete withdrawal from Iraq of all members of the Armed Forces and contractor personnel described in paragraph (1) pursuant to a plan that provides for completion of the withdrawal not later than December 31, 2007.

    (b) Nothing in subsection (a) shall be construed to prohibit or otherwise restrict the use of funds available to any department or agency of the United States to carry out diplomatic efforts or social and economic reconstruction activities in Iraq.

I really don’t get it.How can dems blame Republicans in 2008 for the war if they are the ones who are now voting to finance it? I must be dumb.

  18. rmboyter March 22nd, 2007 10:46 am

Move on must either change their ways or I have given them their last penny from me

  19. Shane March 22nd, 2007 12:34 pm

I was one of the earliest members of MoveOn, and helped them in several of their campaigns on the Hill (carrying petitions, ballots, etc). However, since their total silence over the Israeli attacks on Lebanon last year, I have canceled my subscription and warned all those around me to Pariser’s racist policies.

  20. karlof1 March 22nd, 2007 1:22 pm

Kill Iraqis to fund rural schools. DeFazio is way out on a very thin moral limb.

  21. RichM March 22nd, 2007 3:15 pm

In the Vietnam era, an American commander famously said, “It was necessary to destroy the village in order to save it.”

In regard to the current war funding bill, the Pelosi Democrats are saying, “It is necessary to fund the war (with over $100 billion), in order to end it.”

Actually, it’s even worse than that, because the bill has so many loopholes in it, and is so toothless, that it gives Bush a free hand to invade Iran, & may well lead to no troop reductions whatever, even at the absurdly late timepoint of Aug 31, 2008.

The way this supplemental is being handled by the Democrats (almost all of them, except for the usual Kucinich, Lee, Woolsey, Waters, Stark & a few others) is a compelling illustration of the Party’s worthlessness & treachery. They were voted in, only to stop Bush, and what they’re actually doing is enabling him — all the while, falsely posing as “critics.”

MoveOn has discredited and disgraced itself. It should be regarded as a Dem Party appendage — no more, and no less.

  22. bildad March 22nd, 2007 3:29 pm

I agree with the above about moving on from moveon.org, but as one who was a registered Democrat for 35 years before I quit in disgust, I’d like to encourage MichaelPDA to recognize the futility of trying to reform the Democratic Party from within. Remember the fate of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party?

  23. jjgudat March 22nd, 2007 4:01 pm

MichaelPDA, is the reason I stopped participating in in Prog.Dems. their just slightly left of the DLC, but not much and certainly not Progressive!

Please note, he like the Democrats automatically fund the full amount asked for by the Bushies! Including all the contractors! Wrong!!

Then they had the audacity to claim this is to ‘help the Veterans’ and service members at Walter Reed’ they get far less from this bill then Big Agi-Business! All the veterans get out of this bill is the crumbs!

While the Congress is getting ready to give money to the Chips (child healthcare) the State of Georgia one of the recepients, is cutting the fees for registering cars, which would have provided twice as much money!

The biggest problem with America today may be a toxic epidemic of cowardice. Examples include politicians of all stripes so afraid of losing office they’re afraid to speak their conscience. Journalists so afraid of losing their perks and access to power that they’re afraid to genuinely question the powerful. All of us so terrified of what the other side has to say (or so fearful of our own lack of persuasion abilities) that we attempt to shout down debate.

We have become a nation of fear and fear mongers. Since that is almost the only way to spread concepts that would otherwise be anathema to us, our national health, or at least our psyche, is at serious risk. Not only the Iraq “conquest,” but all the dangerous re-writings of our underlying Constitutional protections came to pass that very way, to name but a few of the resulting odious manifestations of such fear.

We should recognize there is a difference between common sense caution and paranoia. Unfortunately, the latter creates a petri dish for breeding cowardice infections.

Maybe it’s because we have such gutless leaders for models. The spineless Democrats afraid of the word “liberal.” The fearful Republicans afraid to say “The facts of Iraq have subsequently proven me wrong.” The “I’m-hiding-in-my-secret-bunker-all-the-time” Vice President. The “You-go-die-in-Vietnam-while-I-guard-a-Country-Club” President. But, none of us are immune.

If there is an inoculation for such immobilizing fear, it sure deserves the needle.

  25. Vince Lawrence March 23rd, 2007 9:43 am

Noam and others have dissected how the opinion managers have succeeded in isolating us and making us feel powerless. Herr Bush has reinforced this by flipping off the whole country and the world besides.

make Iran go BOOM! nah, nah, you can’t stop me! (thank you Tom Tomorrow)
