Progressives have to learn the value of virgin forests, how biofuels production can be integrated into existing forests using polyculture methods, how to maximize efficiencies and equity by supporting small producers with best information, how to discourage consumption waste while encouraging productivity.
Probably the best thing to do is to have the consumer pay all the externalized costs of energy. It’s not punishment. The poor will NOT be priced out of the market.
Instead, this policy creates economic incentives for people to discover how our biosphere works, how to preserve it, how to squeeze efficiencies out of industry, to find the truth about most appropriate methods, how to organize society to minimize waste, and to transition from the current colossal waste, enslavement and destruction to responsible energy production/consumption.
Currently, the capitalist mafia is manipulating energy demand by hiding the external costs. People have no idea what fossil fuels really costs. People have no idea how much better or worst biofuels, renewables, or hydrogen may be. People have no friggin idea. So the mafia is now switching energy sources, and leaving the mechanisms of waste, plunder, addiction and enslavement intact!
This isn’t how markets are supposed to work. The full costs and the full benefits of each product/method competing in a market have to be fully exposed so the consumer may demand what is in the better interests of the society. Put the external costs of energy into the consumer price and let the market deliver maximum value/benefits/efficiencies.
when hemp gets back in the door, the earth and all it’s inhabitants will reap the benefits.

1. The carrying capacity of the Planet is EXCEEDED. That will become abundantly clear when we realize we have crossed the global oil peak.
Do you have any idea how MUCH oil is in the food-delivery chain??? The EROEI of bio is marginal compared to fossil fuels.
“Markets” got us to this tipping point.
Could we PLEASE stop discussing the fate of the species as anything less than a crisis transcending BOTH our economic system, and our so-called “democratic” system of Government.
It AMAZES me how many people believe that both of these “systems” will survive the century. WHY? These are byproducts of cheap energy, propped up by a growth paradign, soon to be inverted.
There is no rosy scenario - there’s not going to be kids whizzing around in bio-fueled roadsters listening to MP-3’s on their way to lollapalooza.

The return to discuss the (soon to be dwindling) food supply and divide by 6,500,000,000+ people - now figure out how you’re going to divide it equitably.
Would you kill if YOUR family was starving? MOST would.

I also don’t see how capitalism can work forever. It relies on prices spiraling upward forever with the new slaves on the block being the source of cheap labor. How can you base an economic system on the idea that I have to raise my price because my cost went up, then the next guy says the same thing when his cost goes up. Around and around it goes. Sooner or later a loaf of bread cost $8000. And you can guarantee that wages will not keep up with that price.
If Ronald Reagan had continued the work started by Carter we might be on our way to energy independence. Don’t tell me how great he was as a president, saying that just proves your contempt for the middle class and the environment.
Ethanol is a bad idea no matter how you look at it. It requires a huge energy input to produce, equal too or greater than the energy obtained from it and it has lower BTU per gallon so you need to burn MORE for the same driving distance. Bio diesel may have better numbers. Hydrogen can at 100% efficiency give you back exactly the same energy you put in. If that energy is free it might be ok. But name one thing that is 100% efficient? Probably the best long term solution will be to as fast as possible develop FUSION power with Solar for non transportation needs and Hydrogen for aircraft. By the time we run out of deuterium, we may have the Enterprise, NCC 1701 flying!
