There was some good in the Nixon years. His visits to the USSR and China. Nothing good came out of Bush II’s. He’ll go down in history along with Grant and Harding as failures.
Whether Bush was elected or not is moot. He was accepted and I didn’t see any big revolt against him. I agree that it will take a huge wave, 2/3 of the populace to get these guys out, but I wouldn’t hold my breath. Progressives, it seems, are pretty progressive on paper, but when it comes to really creating change, I’m afraid that’s not enough.

Yes, there are musicians and poets with balls, ethics, intelligence, wisdom, good humour, and a vivid sense of personal responsibility for the beauty of the earth, the state of the world, and the reality of America the Beautiful. It’s a different time, place, and circumstance. There are superficial similarities, but America is not the same as it was in the 60s and 70s. The affluence, or at least the appearance of it is vastly greater. Our society runs on excess, and is lulled by superficialities. Nixon was undone by insiders who recognized the fundamental error of his administration’s ways. Daniel Ellsberg turned on the light and exposed the “Pentagon Papers.” John Dean revealed the rampant illegalities within the White House activities because he could not in good conscience participate in them. The lesson of loyalty above all has been learned and Bush’s administration suffers no ethical dilemmas. They serve their masters first and the American people if it is convenient. Priorities and loyalties are unquestioning. Let’s hope one day one of them will grow a conscience — or fear of hell. Failing that, subpoenaed testimonies might shed some light if lying could lead to jail.

The main reason is they are not at risk as the young were in those days. The draft made activists of us all and even after it was replaced a generation had by then, been politicized. Sadly, young people are NOT the answer today and that, given their numbers and education, is the great tragedy of our times. In an age that will perhaps be remembered as the time America was “Corporatized” the young are mesmerized by the culture created by Corporate america. So far from being voices that challenge Corporate america, they are in many ways, its most willing and submissive acolytes.

Whoa Joyce! That election was the first time I was able to vote and I did, as did many of my friends, and we didn’t vote for Nixon.
In 2000 approximately 17% of ALL registered voters cast a vote for Bush, and perhaps one one hundredth of a percentage point more voted for Gore. Do the math, it aint just young people. This was driven home to me during 2004. Enthused by Dean I allowed myself to be used as a recruiter of un-registered voters. The usual response can be summed up like this: “Do I look like a sucker? Take your politics and your party and stick them where the sun doesn’t shine!”
Sure can be hard to say positive. Can’t blame the many non-voters who realize that the Democrats and Republicans are just two slightly different strains of the same disease.

Molly Ivins was a great proponent of the idea that fundamentally nothing would change until we got campaign finance under control. I tend to believe this but since the seats of money and power like it just the way it is, it will take a knowledgeable and empowered grass roots organization.
I am sickened by a a presidential electoral process that is “already” gearing up and will predictably be one of the rich people already in front of us.
Last time, even though I voted and contributed for John Kerry I was disturbed to realize that this was going to be republican-lite. Do we think Hillary Clinton intends to disturb the power structure? Obama? Nice man but what has he really done? My favorite, John Edwards, is clearly NOT endorsed by the democratic power structure.
All politics has powerfully become appearance over content.
Mark David Chapman was no lone nut who wanted a piece of Lennon’s fame. He was trained at several army bases known for inteligence/mind op programs including the one in his native Hawaii by COINTELPRO. Where did he get the $ to fly around the country several times before the assasination of Lennon, and what about the large sums of money in his bank accounts?
The powers that be had to clear the way for the next 12 years of Reagan/Bush illeagalities and knew Lennon, who was coming back into the public eye, would mobilize the people against them. Ok conspiracy theories aside and stop the conparisons. We need to fight NOW! The gentle slide into fascism is our immediate threat: TVs, iPOds, PCs, SUVs, the whole f-ing commodity culture. The inevitable decline of resources and the abandonment of the market will threaten millions. Yes the “MARKET”. Once the financial markets collapse, all hell will cut loose. Utter desperation will take over and the opportunitists will step up. It is very simple, we need alternatives !!!!
The reason I think Bush/Cheney are “take-downable” is that the American people are inexorably turning against them. The only reason Clinton was found not-guilty on impeachment and stayed in office (never mind the witch-hunt that got him in trouble) was that the People said “Okay, okay, he lied, he had illicit sex, the intern thing, etc., etc….BUT We Still Want Him. People don’t want Bush anymore, and the numbers are growing.
