I say to Peter Tatchell, do not sound so smug and sanctimonious and throw a curve ball. Do not make it sound like the “WEST” is still carrying “THE WHITE MAN’S BURDEN”.
There is no human rights ! What has for years passed as human rights is nothing but a big club to clobber our third world brothers with; and human rights is nothing but a bid white TROJAN HORSE to invade and aggress against our third world.
Today there is a dimming of the shrill clarion call for human rights, because the world has awoken to the USA charade of hectoring us in the third world, and invading us in naked aggression to steal our natural resources. Take Iraq for example, and the hydro carbon laws that has been passed by Iraqi traitors and puppets of the Americans that has privatised Iraq oil reserves to be plundered by the Americans & the British. Iraq will be left with nothing.
To Peter Hatchell, you cannot fool every body all the time, although you still think you can.
In the absence of availability of humane methods for birth control and with the spread of new methods of death control, nature is balancing global overpopulation in her own nasty way. Many of us know this, cannot approve of it, so we ignore it just as we do human overpopulation itself.
Nature responds only to stresses like overpopulation, resource depletion, environmental pollution and species extinction. Human rights are a human construct that is lost when we go against nature.
As wealth and power concentrate, its global search for cheaper labor also stimulates global population growth–the more people, the cheaper the labor, the richer fewer become and the more jaded everyone becomes to the resulting violence.
Why do many on the left have a bias against right wing dictatorships and in favor of left wing? North Korea and Cuba come to mind. As a Libertarian, I’m critical of dictatorships on both side of the political spectrum and work for the constitution here.
“Left” and “right” don’t make the distinction between liberal and conservative. Left wing conservatives like Stalin, Pol Pot and Caescescu are not much different from right wing conservatives like Hitler, Mussolini and Bush, dictators all. It’s a mistake to think that “real” conservatives are good conservatives as they differ only in degree. They all toe the autocratic line and vote for the right or left wing dictator in fear and in hate.

Amnesty International regularly has actions on behalf of women who are under a sentence of stoning and gay men who have been imprisoned in developing countries. There are different methods for different circumstances. Perhaps joining a local AI group and writing petitions is not as “visible” or strident as some of the “left-wing” commentaries, but it can be an effective means of gaining human rights for those who have been deprived.
What the author is talking about is double-standards and how they affect ones moral authority. I see his point in how the loudest defenders of human rights seem strident in denouncing US, UK, Israel etc. but not in the same terms or vigor with other, equally or more severe abuses elsewhere or in minority communities. Liberal actions on the topic of human rights are unbalanced, and that is wrong and a wrong that should be corrected. Gosh! Why does self-criticism on the left always seem so taboo?
Canada has a “Bill of Rights” that applies to ALL people. Canada recognizes human rights. The U.S. does not. Apparently, rights are for Americans citizens only.
The author correctly points out that western media and thereby western consciousness and morality doesn’t extent to other parts of the world. I guess a slow genocide isn’t newsworthy.
Canada’s policy on human rights doesnt apply when it comes to Haiti now does it? As a Canadian I also have to be ashamed that we are going to be slaughtering a few hundred thousand seals in a few weeks. Nothing says civilized like taking a spiked club to the heads of infant wildlife to provide welfare for stupid greedy fishermen and aphrodisiacs for asia.

**bravo. This is so true. Its very common for lefties to avoid the humanness of other races and cultures . They are also capable of greed, violence, stupidity. That isnt white man’s burden–its everyone’s.
I think the history of Western oppression against so many “others” in the world in the name of “universal human rights” and liberation (witness Iraq) must be recognized as a principal justification of imperialism. Moreover, there is an internal contradiction between notions of self-determination and “universal human rights” and those manifestations of culture or societal structure that we in the West condemn, such as female genital mutilation. The West has such a sordid record of citing the oppressions of “others” as justification for its oppression of those “others”, that all we can do at this point is try to support those groups within other societies that oppose oppressive practices. Or, we must point out the oppressions that still exist within our own societies before we condemn others.
We must acknowledge and fight the continued sexism, racism, classism, speceism, and homophobia that are still so prevalent within our own Western liberal societies and stop pretending that we are the standard bearers of freedom for the rest of the world to admire and emulate.
“The Left” or what remains of it in the US has struggled for the last eight years to be heard at all. The so-called “liberal media” has a distinct preference for airing voices calling for war and the reduction of human rights in order to fight the “War on Terra.”
Right now what remains of the left in the US would be doing good to see the US constitution applied to all people within the borders of the US. Currently that standard does not apply.
“Rights” of sexual, gender or racial minorities don’t amount to much. The right to health care, food and housing is a dim dream for US citizens. Ditto the right to have our votes counted. We don’t have the right to have them counted equally. I’m not even sure we have the “right” to breathe clean air; I think it’s being sold for carbon credits.
If the oppressed people of Africa, the Middle East and Asia want human rights they are going to have to do the work themselves. The left her in the US of A is busy at home.

Many of us watched as several other better known candidates w/”creds,” & much less vulnerable to Clintonian duplicity were discredited and/or banned from the all powerful Machine-Clinton. Obama’s got a vision– and, too honest for a politician. But since our mission has gotta be to prove we’re not the World’s!! Public Enemy # 1, we’re done if his candidacy doesn’t survive– and it’s back, to square Bush/Clinton 1.
They brought their whole machine to bear on Chris Matthews, a well known & much loved TV news show host. and man! he took a beating from the Elitist establishment even!! Barbara Walters , former fiance’ of the Clintonian advocate, Alan Greenspan. I listened to Mike Malloy on Air America who lost his job for speaking the truth– without the crass revisionism Bill demands. It’s no wonder there is so much fear.
