Well, it kind of does in some ways doesn’t it? You don’t have to be aggressively loud and intimidating, but you do have to be the loudest in the end. That’s how Vietnam was stopped. It eventually got too loud for the government to hear anything else.

Funny, isn’t it, the “spat upon vet” myth turns out to be true; just it’s exactly backward. It’s grown-up men spitting on vets who have served and they’re calling the vets unpatriotic. Inside out, upside down, just completely bizarre.
I tell you, if anyone ever spits on me the only thing I’m going to give them is a knuckle sandwich. Spitting on someone is an assault, pure and simple. I’m not passivist enough to let that one go.

Anytime a war is started based on lies those that die, die in vain. Just like 58,000 of my brothers-in-arms did in Viet Nam.
Sad that we have those that couldn’t learn that from that war. As bad as it was, that would have been one good thing that could have come from it.

I never was spat on so I can’t say, but there were those protesters who dressed up in uniform and went to the homes of familes who had family members serving and falsely notified them that their loved one had died. And that is a fact and that was worse.

Just as a note: I was spat on … many times during the Vietnam era. I was assigned to Lyndon Johnson’s Honor Guard and we appeared at all his public appearances (Actually appeared might be too vague. We formed a barrier between him and the public.) Left wing protesters spat on us. They threw shit at us. But I see them as no different than the right-wing hate twerps today.
They are selfish to the point of self-obsession, clinging to their ideology so compellingly that they can only de-humanize those they disagree with. Whether it’s the spit from the lips of one of these pro-Bush guys or the bile spewing from the lips of one Ann Coulter, it’s all the same: adolescent, fearful, ignorance-fed hate.
As my life experiences have taught me, no ideology is lacking in this demeaning trait. In fact, I have come to believe that ideology is itself the greatest enemy of a democracy. Perhaps that’s why Americans are so numb to politics. Why they don’t vote. Why the young don’t even care. Politics has become inhuman and disgusting because these “creeps” are the only ones we see, the only ones granted air time by the whorish media, the only ones who “sell” advertising.
Walt, well-said, I totally agree. I am a dedicated leftist, getting more so as I age. I understand that there are fundamental differences in worldview and basic assumptions between how I see things and how conservatives do. But you don’t hear those arguments anymore - only mindless name-calling, shouting, polarization based on distorted and hateful label-and-smear tactics. I have some good friends who are conservatives, and we often argue, but no one stoops to the kind of mindless drivel that passes for political discourse today.
We struggled to lable the iraq conflict a civil war. We debate our positions using quotes and misquotes from Lincoln in our own civil war. A war much neater than iraq, where here most northern were union most southern were confederate supporters. The divisions from Viet Nam, the hold over prejudice of civil rights, racial equality sexual discrimination, (Its moving from oppressing women, to those with same sex orientation) and what is proudly proclaimed the culture wars today seem to be bubbling to a head over our war in Iraq. Todays headlines in Iran - British soldiers captured heightens the potiential for greater conflict at home. It isn’t as easy as red states blue states, as rich and poor, it is neighbor vs. neighbor, and the cycle of our conflict is increasing. Critical days, lets not ratchet up the volume, lets articulate the debate in reasonable tones, with firm conviction
jmndodge - it’s even worse than that. It’s brother against brother, soldier against soldier, conservative against conservative - and the creeps that caused all this misery still party-hearty as they rake in the cash.
Just look at what’s happening to those ‘appointees’ that didn’t toe-the-line - they’re demonized as ‘traitors’ - this is more than just a disagreement or contrast of philosophies. This is despotism at its worst. And it makes a farce of all those who sacrificed to defend human rights and the freedom to disagree.
Conformity is the only issue - join the hate-mongers or suffer the consequences. Liberals can be just as vicious and hateful as conservatives - just listen to some of their rants. Mobs reduce the debate to the lowest common denominator - it doesn’t matter which side you’re on. Reason doesn’t matter when someone is defending untenable mythology. Nobody listens when they feel under attack - too many Americans (from both sides of the question) have drunk the Kool-Aid. Welcome home, Jim Jones. Iraq is a reflection of our disease - it has been recreated in our image, and nobody is happy with the results.
When I see a propaganda news story of a return’ee soldier kissing and huging his children when he returns from Iraq, I can’t help but wonder how many Iraqie children he made orphans or in a lot of cases killed.
